“Windsor Math & Science Academy” Opens
Middle School Specializing in Math and Science for Grades 6-8
Open House and Information Session to be Held on the 15th of next month
Windsor Math & Science Academy (WMSA, Principal Su Byun), a private middle school specializing in math and science, has opened in the heart of LA’s Koreatown.
At the opening ceremony held at 5 p.m. on the 29th, prominent figures from the Korean community and education community, including Robert Ahn, President of the Korean Association of Los Angeles; Elizabeth Desmarais, Vice Principal of St. James School; and Aiden Ko, former chaplain of St. James School, attended to celebrate the new school’s launch.
WMSA, a private middle school for grades 6-8, is located in the heart of Koreatown at the intersection of Wilshire and Norton, a 15-minute commute from downtown LA and a 30-minute commute from West LA. WMSA began with parents’ requests for a prestigious private middle school in Koreatown. Discussions intensified last year, and after a preparatory period this spring, the school received official approval and opened in the summer.
Principal Su Byun stated, “Students aiming to attend prestigious universities need systematic learning starting in middle school. Many students are struggling to bridge the academic gap that has widened since the pandemic. WMSA aims to provide an education that fosters creativity and collaboration alongside foundational academic skills.”
He added, “As the first Korean community to offer AP exam preparation and college tour programs, we hope to build on our experience in helping numerous students gain admission to prestigious universities, creating a new chapter in educational history in the heart of Koreatown.”
Chairman Robert Ahn stated, “It’s been heartbreaking to see young families leaving Koreatown due to the educational environment. The establishment of a high-quality private middle school in this area is deeply meaningful. We are delighted that students will now have access to a quality education without having to move far away.” The school emphasizes student-centered, experimental, and research-based instruction, and features a computer lab equipped with high-performance workstations, a research lab for biology, chemistry, and water experiments, and diverse learning spaces, including a gymnasium, music room, and art room. It offers courses in AI, cybersecurity, robotics, and data analysis, and actively supports participation in various competitions, including the Math and Science Olympiad, the National Science Bowl, hackathons, and debate clubs.
Admission to WMSA is selective, and applicants must pass entrance exams in math, science, and English, as well as an interview. Admission for the 2026-2027 school year will be held twice: December 5-6 and December 12-13. The application deadline is January 30 of next year. An open house will be held on December 15, with information sessions and school tours from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

“한인타운에서도 양질 교육 가능” ‘윈저 아카데미’ 개교

6~8학년 수학·과학 특화 중학교
내달 15일 오픈하우스·설명회 개최
LA 한인타운 중심부에 수학과 과학을 전문으로 하는 사립중학교 ‘윈저 매스앤사이언스 아카데미(Windsor Mat Science.WMSA, 교장 수 변)’가 문을 열었다.
지난 29일 오후 5시에 열린 개교식에는 로버트 안 LA한인회장, 엘리자베스 드스마레이스 세인트 제임스스쿨 부교장 , 에이든 고 세인트 제임스 스쿨 전 교목 등 한인사회와 교육계 주요 인사들이 참석해 새 학교의 출범을 축하했다.
WMSA는 6~8학년을 위한 사립중학교로 윌셔와 노턴이 만나는 한인타운 중심에 위치해 LA다운타운에서 15분, 웨스트LA에서 30분 이내에 통학할 수 있다.
WMSA는 한인타운 내 명문 사립중학교의 필요성에 대한 학부모들의 요구로 시작됐다. 지난해 논의가 본격화돼 올 봄 준비 과정을 거친 뒤 여름에 정식 인가를 받아 개교했다.
수 변 교장은 “명문대 진학을 목표로 하는 학생일수록 중학교 때부터 체계적인 학습이 필요하다”며 “많은 학생이 팬데믹 이후 커진 학업 격차를 회복하는데 어려움을 겪고 있다. WMSA는 기초 학업 능력과 함께 창의력·협업 능 키우는 교육을 지향한다”고 말했다.
또한 “한인사회에서 처음으로 AP시험 준비와 대학탐방 프로그램 진행 등을 통해 다수의 학생을 명문대에 진학시 경험을 바탕으로 한인타운 중심에서 새로운 교육 역사를 쓰고 싶다”고 덧붙였다.
로버트 안 회장은 “젊은 가족들이 교육 여건 때문에 한인타운을 떠나는 현실이 안타까웠다”며 “이 지역에 수준 높은 사립중학교가 세워진 것은 큰 의미가 있다. 학생들이 먼 곳으로 이사하지 않아도 양질의 교육을 받을 수 있게 된 이 반갑다”고 말했다.
학교는 학생 중심의 실험·연구 기반 수업을 강조하며 고성능 워크스테이션을 갖춘 컴퓨터 실습실, 생물·화학·물 실험을 위한 리서치 랩, 그리고 체육관·음악실·미술실 등 다양한 학습 공간을 완비했다. AI·사이버보안.로보 ·데이터 분석 등을 가르치고 수학·과학 올림피아드, 내셔널 사이언스볼, 해커톤, 디베이트 클럽 등 각종 경시대 참가도 적극적으로 지원한다.
WMSA의 입학은 선발제로 진행되며 지원자는 수학·과학·영어 입학시험과 면접을 통과해야 한다. 2026~2027학 사년도 입학을 위한 시험은 12월 5~6일과 12월 12~13일 두 차례 실시된다. 원서 접수 마감은 내년 1월 30일이다. 오픈하우스는 내달 15일에 열리며 설명회와 학교 투어는 오전 10시부터 12시까지 진행된다.
